Reports to: Principal of High School and Transition Academy
Employment Information: Full-time unit position
Qualifications:
- At least a high school diploma or equivalent
- Bureau of Special Education Paraeducator Credential, Associate’s Degree from an accredited college/university, and/or Certification from a Career/Technical Institute is preferred.
- Understanding of and knowledge of the development of typical Deaf learners as well as students with multiple disabilities.
- American Sign Language skill required.
- Experience with the utilization of visual supports with students
- Experience working with individuals across the array of teenage learner, including students with cognitive and emotional developmental delays to students whose post-secondary desires are to attend college or receive vocational training.
- Experience with Deaf-Blind is a plus.
- An ability to adapt instructional materials and methods to meet the needs of a variety of young adult learners, as directed by the teacher and/or consultants.
- Understanding of and experience with a culturally diverse population
- Ability to use and to support students’ use of basic technology skills and equipment used within the Transition Academy programming
- Ability to support financial literacy instruction to students
- Understanding and acceptance of the communication principles which emphasize full accessibility to all communication in the school environment, the importance of self-expression and respect for each individual’s communication needs (including assistive technology. - Experience as a member of an instructional team is preferred.
- Experience/training in a Career and Technical Education area is a plus.
- Possesses a strong desire for students of all abilities to achieve their employment potential.

Duties:
- Support the implementation of students’ Individualized Education Plans, including their transition plans.
- Collaborate with the Transition Academy Team and Transition Coach to support the needs of students.
- Engage in professional development.
- Support the teacher with assessments of student performance relating to the development of work-ready skills. This may include data collection, material creation, and/or working with a group of students if the teacher is working 1:1 with a student.
- Model and support leisure and recreational activities for students to encourage a lifetime wellness.
- Assist the teacher in their work with students of varying abilities (from college-bound to life skills) in developing pre-employment skills
- Substitute for teacher(s) in the class/team during teacher absence, as needed
- Assist with supervision of students (e.g., on trips, at lunch etc.)
- Provide meaningful and interactive language experiences with students under the direction of the teacher
- Provide appropriate support to students in their growth and development (e.g., academic, social skills, etc.)
- Participate in team, cluster and school-wide meetings
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
This position may require the following physical demands:
- Occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
- Generally, work in standard office conditions and climate.
- Regularly walk, sit, stand, kneel, crouch, stoop and reach with hands and arms.
- Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
- Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screen.
